CNPS Social Justice Speaker Series: Human Rights & Counselling Psychology

Join us for the first talk of the CNPS Social Justice Committee Guest Speaker Series with Dr. Kirby Huminuik, Registered Psychologist and Director of Counselling Services at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Huminuik will be speaking about the relationships between human rights and counselling psychology.

About the Speaker:

Kirby is a Registered Psychologist and the Director of Counselling Services at UBC. In addition to her work in university counselling services, she maintains a specialization in Global Mental Health. She has produced academic and community-based research on human rights and refugee mental health and has been responsible for international psychosocial human rights projects funded by the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture and the Canadian International Development Agency. She provides pro-bono psychological assessment for refugee claimants, and consultation, program development, and professional training services for refugee supporting agencies in Vancouver. In 2021, as a member of the APA Task Force on Human Rights, she co-authored the final report advising APA on strategic directions in its engagement in the promotion and protection of human rights. Kirby is active in the profession of psychology and has served in various capacities in the Canadian Psychological Association, American Psychological Association and the International Council of Psychologists. She currently serves on the steering committee of the Human Rights and Social Justice Committee at CPA.
